About the Mentorship Program
We are happy to start to recruit our first cohort of this brand new program. It has been designed that DiS will be taking care of our STEM mentors and mentees, and Disabled in Higher Ed the non-STEM (any other discipline) mentors and mentees.
This mentorship program is designed to last a year, but we hope that the relationship lasts well beyond a year! As we are completely volunteer-run, we appreciate your patience and understanding, along with welcoming any feedback on how to make the program even better.
We will be creating a Slack server to connect mentees and mentors. There will be a private slack channel for mentors to share experiences, but personal information that your mentee tells you should be considered confidential. Additionally, regular activities (every 4-6 weeks) will be facilitated by DiS and Disabled in Higher Ed to allow mentor and mentee groups to meet separately and share experiences (e.g.) mentors circle.

Why become a mentee?Academia can be a really daunting and challenging place to work and learn, and this is particularly true for disabled people. Having a mentor can be really helpful in navigating some of the barriers you face, can be an advocate, support you in self-advocacy, and provide wisdom from their lived-experience having gone through academic environments. Needing a mentor can occur throughout out lives, whether you are an undergrad, graduate student, or postdoc! You may just find the mentor you need here.

Why become a mentor? You have lived experience that can help guide early career disabled individuals, whether you are disabled or not. By providing your advocacy, support, and advice with navigating barriers in academia you can help improve representation of disabled academics. Mentoring is open to anyone in academia and at every stage: faculty, research associates, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, etc.

Need a Mentor? Become a mentee!
Mentees must be disabled in order to participate, but disclosure is not necessary on the application form or throughout any point of participating in the program. If you feel comfortable, you may share with your mentor, but there is no requirement to do so. Mentees can be from any timezone or any career-stage as we want to be as inclusive as possible. To be matched with a mentor, your preference will be taken into account, but unfortunately cannot be guaranteed.

Want to Help? Become a Mentor!
Mentors will be provided guidelines and training (which will be recorded for those who can’t make it) regarding mentoring disabled individuals, but further guidance can be provided at any point by contacting [email protected]. We appreciate allies who are willing to support the disabled community and willing to learn how to continue to empower disabled individuals.
